The Boy-2-Men mentoring program targets at-risk African American boys 7-9 (future leaders) in order to prevent the development of antisocial behavior and academic failure. We are planning to offer the experience to African American girls ages 7-9 in the near future. The program is currently extended for 9 months for the duration of the school year and includes a beginning orientation, complete academic and behavioral assessment and testing. The academic part of the program includes intensive tutoring and support utilizing the innovative Khan Academy learning platform coupled with state-of-the-art computer-based instruction. The program enrolls 20 students and 20 mentors. All mentors are screened and trained by way of partnership with the Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania. The responsibility of the mentors is to assist students with educational, social, and community centered enrichment, as well as provide support for academic achievement success. The program teach skills that promote resiliency against the risk factors of poverty and delinquency, while also providing much needed academic and moral support.

Each student is engaged academically by a certified teacher and teachers aide who provides one-on-one instruction in a full range of subjects. After completing an academic and behavioral assessment, a customized success plan is developed to insure that each student achieves above grade level standards in addition to cultivating behavioral and peer relationship milestones at home and school.

Each month, students and mentors attend one hour of structuredtraining sessions as a group. In addition, all mentors participate in three hours per months of meaningful recreational and personal 1-to-1 interaction with their assigned student for a total of four hours of active participation in the mentoring program each month. Mentors also visit the child's home and school and interacts with teachers, administrators, parents and a community support network. FLC mentors come from a variety backgrounds including business, government, community and non-profit, religious, and law enforcement. The results have been nothing short of transformative.

The program will include three hours per week of active participation in computer and Khan Academy-based academic and educational preparedness tutoring programs covering: Test-taking Skills, Memory Improvement Skills, Study Environment Creation Skills, Stress Management and TestAnxiety Alleviation Skills, Academic Organizational Skills, Language Arts Skills, Vocabulary Enhancement, Science,Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Skills Development, Computer Technology Skills, Classroom Etiquette and Academic Preparedness Skills.
